Our present generation thinks that “liberation” means carelessness. So, you see people who “kiss and tell” in the name of liberation. This is a generation that has become so shameless, a costly approach to life that is shaking the very fabrics of our existence. Decorum is frowned upon and carefulness has become a synonym for “holier-than-thou”. This is a generation where “keeping it real” means becoming shameless.
We live in a world where people think that keeping it real means washing your dirty linen in the public. You reveal things that are meant to be private, they cheer you, you bask in the euphoria of the moment and when all the noise has died down, you begin to live in regret, you begin to wonder what came over you. Life is much more than clout but today, people invest all the integrity that they have managed to build just for the sake of clout.
Everyone wants some form of acceptance but they are looking the wrong way. They think that social media followership, likes, shares and comments are all forms of acceptance. These things will give you a false feeling of acceptance but when the shipwreck, you’ll realize that you’ve been driving all alone in virtual reality.

Before you begin to delve into very sensitive topics, think through about what your response will result in, think about the consequences it will have in your future. Nobody becomes relevant by chasing clout. When you raise fans on clout, they aren’t there for you, they are there for the noise and after the noise has gone, they will be nowhere to be found.
It’s better to say “I don’t know” or “I don’t remember” instead of talking rubbish in the public to the hearing of everybody. Whatever word you drop isn’t in your control anymore. When you say things on TV, for example, you may not have to repeat yourself again but even if the TV station doesn’t repeat it, some people will repeat it on your behalf. We live in an information age where your words are syndicated through platforms you have little or no control over.
I many cases, it is after the noise has died down and the cheers have ceased that all the decorum in the world will begin to surface in your head and you begin to tell yourself “I should have done it this way”. See, it is either you rehearse your words carefully or you avoid saying anything at all whenever you find yourself in the middle of a sensitive discussion. It is better to have no opinion about something than have an opinion that you won’t be proud of in the next few minutes.

“Keeping it real” doesn’t mean destroying your integrity, it doesn’t mean washing your dirty linen in the public, it doesn’t being careless with words or acting carelessly. These days, we assume that careless people are being real while careful people are living in pretence. This is a subtle way of trying to subject everyone to living careless lives for the sake of peer acceptance.
Not all of your mistakes should grace social media or national tv, not all of your messy secrets should be unveiled for clout. Even if you must chase clout, use things that you are in control of. The world will pretend as they care about you until there is nothing left of you anymore. The same people who cheered you on will be the ones to condemn you.
Before you talk about your messy past, post that twerk video, go nude on Instagram or Snapchat, send that DM, hit the publish button, engage in that argument or sub, be sure that you have outgrown the effects. As you are “keeping it real”, look ahead. Protect your future, don’t join the bandwagon.

Just in case you don’t know, there are unwritten codes of personal branding and whatever you do, whatever you put out there represents you and can also haunt you in the future even when you are long gone from that position.
I rest my case.
