Judge nothing by appearance. It’s not worth it, and it ends up making you a liar in most cases.
A man may own ten cars and you wrongly judge him for not helping the poor by selling some of those cars and giving the money away to the poor. Judas once judged a woman for ‘wasting’ a perfume that would have been sold and the money used to help the poor.
Sometimes, things don’t look as they seem. Our judgement would have been right if the appearance was the truth but things don’t ALWAYS look as they seem. The truth is not subjective, they are not determined by what we feel should be the truth.
After I got my new job, I was given an official phone. It is a smartphone that is on par with what I use before getting the job. That means I had to carry two middle-range smartphones around and also my feature phone which serves as a backup.
Now, someone saw me and was like “what are you doing with two smartphones? Young people of nowadays, must you always show yourself?” I didn’t bother explaining to him that one is my personal phone and the other is my official line for office engagements.
The day I had an accident, I couldn’t make use of just a space. Normally, the buses take three people per seat but I had to pay for double spaces so that I can stay comfortable and not injure myself further.
A young girl entered the bus, when she wanted to sit on the space I already paid for and was informed that I had paid for it, she said “Hian! As in what? What is this one forming?” She wrongly judged me, it was night and she couldn’t notice the wound on my leg.
On the surface, no one could have guessed why I would take two space when there were many people outside hoping to get a bus home since it was night and buses were getting scarce. I may have been judged as uncompassionate and wicked without knowing that I was going through pain and only had one option.
They judged me by what they saw on the surface, they weren’t willing to look beyond the surface, they weren’t willing to ask me why I was paying for two seats if indeed there was a valid reason to ask. Probably, some would have gotten home to tell others “I met a young man today who paid for double seats while making use of only one just to exhibit his wickedness and keep some people stranded.”
Saint Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 11:14
“But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.” 2 Corinthians 11:14 NLT
You see, appearance can be very deceitful. There are people we accepted merely because they appeared great but we never took time to know who they really are. There are people we hailed and endorsed just because of what they appeared to be but truly isn’t and there are people we rejected just because they didn’t appear in what we label as “righteous”.
Jesus puts it this way
“Look beneath the surface so you can judge correctly.” John 7:24 NLT
Who have you judged wrongly? Do you just judge things by how they appear? Do you conclude about a book by how the cover appears or do you judge someone by their appearance?
Maybe, it’s time to have a rethink.
