If God created the heavens and the earth in the beginning, where was God before the beginning?
Some aspect of God is a mystery. Yes, he has revealed all he wants us to know about him in Jesus, the Bible tells us that Jesus is the express image of the invisible God. Jesus is God’s way of having a form on earth.
However, we can’t say that we have known all of God. Even the Angels who bow before him raises their head to make a discovery which leaves them in awe. The Angels do not worship God merely because God commanded them to worship him, they worship God because they are always perplexed by his glory.
The Bible tells us that God’s mercies are new every morning! This means that every moment we behold him, even though he is unchanging, there is a discovery to be made.
Some things about God are beyond explanations because our words are so limited to explain him. God is beyond perfect, he is beyond beauty, he is beyond all that we can ever imagine!
When we ask questions like “where was God before the beginning?”, we are trying to confine God into time and a place. God dwells outside of time, time is his creation as well as the Universe. The Bible says
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” – Genesis 1:1 KJV
The beginning signifies the start of time, this means it all started somewhere. God is the beginner without a beginning, he kick-started the beginning and created matter through which the physical realm finds expression.
The nearest star to our solar system will take at least 80,000 years of journey before we can reach it while the nearest galaxy will take us 749 million years to reach. To get to the end of the known universe, it will take 225 trillion years to get there.
That is to say that we are as small as a grain of rice when we look at the larger picture.
Yet, God dwells outside our Universe and outside time. God is not bound by any matter, he is not confined to a place neither does he operate on time.
Time and matter make sense in the physical realm but in the spiritual realm, there is no such thing! There is no “before” of God, he has no yesterday, or today! God is finite! He exists from eternity to eternity which clearly shows that he is beyond eternity!
There is no way we can grasp or explain this because we are humans who only operate on time. We can’t even ask “what was God doing before the beginning?” Because there is no before the beginning! It’s just as unexplainable as it sounds.
The Psalmist wrote, “Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” – Psalm 90:2 NIV
In Exodus 3:14, Moses wanted to find a way to explain God to the people and he asked God “who should I tell them sent me?” God answered him saying “I AM WHO I AM”.
He is just God all by himself, whether we believe him or not, whether we obey him or not, he is God! He won’t change, he doesn’t depend on our votes to stay valid, he is not threatened by what anyone says!
Revelations 1:8 says “I am the Alpha and the Omega [the Beginning and the End],” says the Lord God, “Who is [existing forever] and Who was [continually existing in the past] and Who is to come, the Almighty [the Omnipotent, the Ruler of all].” – Revelation 1:8 AMP
He sees the end of time from the beginning because he made time. Time is not evolving, time is not improving or disproving. He just knows time by its millisecond and he is not surprised by any tick of the clock!
Paul wrote “According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:” – Ephesians 1:4 KJV
He chose us even before we existed. Before we were ever formed in the womb he already knew us by name, he knows the choices we will make in life and he knows the very state of our end on earth. That is why we call him “omnipotent and omniscient” because he is everywhere and he knows everything.
However, God is not hidden. He has constantly revealed himself to people. In all of this, the same God who is full of mystery took the form of a man in all humility.
“Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges ; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, ” – Philippians 2:6-7 NLT
Yes, God himself came to physically identify with man. He paid the ultimate price for man to unite man with himself. You may wonder, Is Jesus God? We already answered that in a previous article.
