Every part of God’s word is very profound but there are places that stand out for me! One of such places is Romans 8:14
“For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God”
There is a way you might read the above and you miss the point. It should be understood this way “all sons of God are led by the Spirit of God”. What makes us sons of God? The Bible tells us in John 1:12
“But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.”
Every believer has been given the right to become children of God. Yet again, if we don’t read this place carefully, we may miss the point. By saying we’ve been given the right to become children of God, the Bible isn’t suggesting that we aren’t children of God yet. We are rightly God’s children, it is indisputable.
The day you believed the gospel of Jesus Christ, that you were a sinner but Jesus paid the price to bring you into union with God, you became a child of God and you were given the Spirit of God! Remember how we started? We started by seeing that all sons of God are led by the Spirit and all children of God have the Spirit of God.
Responsibility is what always separates the sons from the Children. Sons are still God’s Children who have known better and taken responsibility, they allow themselves to be led by the Spirit of God in them.
There is a beautiful thing about this Spirit of God which has been given to us:
“So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”” – Romans 8:15
God’s Spirit doesn’t make us fearful slaves, it gives us uncommon boldness. The Spirit of God was given to us on the day of our adoption as God’s children! Allowing ourselves to be led by the Spirit of God must be deliberate. Yes, God’s Spirit is always leading us but the question is “are we following?”
Don’t misunderstand my initial logic of contrasting sons from children. Every one of us are sons of God, every one of us are children of God but there are those who are conscious of their sonship, they are deliberate about it and they have taken responsibilities as God’s sons.
They know God is their father and therefore they can call on him anytime. It is the knowledge of this that makes us call him “Abba” boldly. We don’t come to God through any man, we don’t come to God through any Prophet, there is no bridge, no obstruction! It is a direct relationship between us and God. The Bible says in Hebrews 4:16
“So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.”
You have every right to God’s throne of grace hence the call to come boldly! No one is more anointed to speak to God on your behalf better than you! The Bible says we can call him “Abba”. ‘Abba’ means daddy, a more intimate word than the English “father”. The next verse of Romans 8 says something amazing! Let’s read:
“For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.” – Romans 8:16
The Spirit of God joins with our own Spirit to affirm of our sonship! It doesn’t happen through our Pastor, it doesn’t happen through a Prophet, it is direct and even more intimate than the words of mouth. People can stand around you to speak to you but God’s spirit isn’t around you, the Spirit joins with your own Spirit in one fuse! It is an inward witness.
The problem is that some believers limit the Spirit of God by trusting man more than we trust the Spirit. We always want someone to pray for us, we always want someone to lay hands on us, we always want someone to validate us, we always want someone to engineer that jittering feeling of “anointing” when we have been given the Spirit of God to consistently lead us and guide us.
God is your father and wants to be involved in every step you take. There are affairs that only the Spirit of God can guide you in, not Prophets. Every great man God used in the Bible, he spoke to most of them directly and not through Prophets. Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Samuel, David and so on including all the New Testament Saints were all positioned to hear from God even through scriptures. When God wants to have dealing with us on a personal level, he speaks to us and not through Pastors and Prophets.
Let this not confuse you, Pastors are always there to help you. In fact, there are times you may not even know that God is speaking to you, it may require an Elder, a Pastor to point you to God but not to hear on your behalf. Samuel heard from God but never knew. It was Eli who pointed him to God and then he was able to listen.
The New Testament believer has been anointed and empowered to receive from the Spirit on-demand. The New Testament prophet ONLY preach and teach the word of God, edifying the body of Christ through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, he doesn’t guide you in your personal affairs. He doesn’t take the place of the Holy Spirit.
Are you confused on the issues of marriage, Business choices, journey, academics or just about any personal affair including the place of kingdom service where you truly belong? While you seek the counsels of others, always be open to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Don’t seek the counsel of others on the note of finality, it should pass through the filter of discernment. In the same way, everything you are taught by any man should pass this test too.
Some believers went Bankrupt because a Pastor or Prophet told them “this is the business God wants you to do”, some got stabbed or heavily abused in their marriages because Pastor or Prophet said, “this is whom God has destined that you marry!”
Go back and ask the Holy Spirit to lead you. There is an inward witness; the Holy Spirit, he will give you prompts, he will show you signs, he may speak to you through the scriptures – He just won’t be silent on you!
You are a believer, Christ lives in and through you! That is what Christianity is about. You must come to that level where you don’t run from pillar to post looking for who to pray for you, who to lay hands on you and who can arrange fasting and prayers for you. Ministers of the gospel have been given for your spiritual growth, they don’t make some decisions on your behalf neither do they pray some prayers on your behalf.
Stand up now and position yourself into that which God has called you. I call you blessed.
