So many times, because of the mistakes we made in the past, people seem to remember us for that and they even seem to craft our personality into that mess so that any day or anywhere your name is mentioned, you are remembered for the mistakes you saw yourself in.
For example, a certain pageant was caught up in a scandal of lesbian act where she was using cucumber to masturbate. Let’s call her Ifeoma. Till date, she is being referred to as “Ifeoma Cucumber.” Humans are just like that, they will want to always remind you that you made a mistake, that you were once a failure and that you’ve got no stake in a good life.
Your focus shouldn’t be on what people are saying, your focus should be on God’s word. Understanding your true identity empowers you to live your best and above people’s expectations. While you may need to earn people’s trust, God can’t be lobbied with your good actions. He already showed his love for you by the sacrifice of Jesus. No matter what your past looks like, the Bible says
“This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” – 2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT
You don’t become a new person because you were able to fight those age-long addictions. You don’t become a new person because you were able to overcome those weaknesses and avoid those mistakes! You became a new person because you now belong to Christ. You didn’t just become a new person, the old life of yours was spiritually deleted and removed from the recycle bin! You now have a new life.
The Bible describes our new life as a person, a distinct and independent person! That is to say, you have become someone that cannot be limited by our own control, someone that can be saved by your own efforts and someone that is blessed by his own toils! This is what the Bible says
“For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.” – Colossians 3:3 NLT
You are dead to the natural life and its circumstances, the natural life has no real hold on you and your real life is now in God’s possession in Christ, in a way that cannot be taken away! The Bible goes further to explain to us who our real life is. Let’s read further
“And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.” – Colossians 3:4 NLT
Do you see that? Christ is your real life! That is why the preceding verse says that your real life is hidden in Christ. In other words, there is no possibility of separating your life from Christ. This is to say that Christ is your sustenance and salvation! If Christ cannot be destroyed, your real-life cannot be destroyed! If Christ is eternal, your real life is eternal! If Christ is holy and perfect, your real life is holy and perfect!
Since your real life is Christ, you will share in all his glory because they are yours! This is your identity, this is who you are, this is God’s greatest miracle, the brand new man! The Bible says
“But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.” – John 1:12-13 NLT
Our right of membership into God’s nuclear family was accorded to us the day we believed in Christ and his salvation. So, if you are believing today that you couldn’t save yourself and that Christ who is God paid the price for your sins, you are not just saved, you have become a member of God’s nuclear family, the direct brother and next of kin of Jesus!
We are not born again according to physical birth or plan but by the supernatural birth that comes from God! This is who you are! Your identity is not dependent on human flaws because human passion and plan are full of flaws! Your rebirth is divine!
No matter what you have done in the past, in the present and in the future, they don’t define who you are as long as you are a believer in Christ Jesus. Your salvation was not dependent on what you did, your identity and rebirth were not dependent on what you did! You are a beneficiary of the finished works of Christ.
You are not who your friends or enemies say you are. You are who you think you are, you are not what you do. The present natural life of this world is something you are already dead to! This means your name is no longer in the registry of this present life but in that supernatural life of God in Christ Jesus! This is who God says you are.
If God’s word says “you are saved.” Then that is the final answer, it is period and there is nothing anyone can do about it to change it! Jesus said something very profound
“So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.” – John 8:36 NLT
There is no reason to doubt your new identity in Christ! If you have been saved, then you are truly saved!
E.E Hewitt’s hymn “My Faith Has Found A Resting Place” is one of those such hymns that serves as my anthem! The refrain says
“I need no other argument,
I need no other plea,
it is enough that Jesus died,
and that he died for me.”
It is enough that Jesus died for me, it enough that God called me his own! I need not fear or panic anymore. I may have wronged you and done terrible things but that’s no longer who I am! I am a child of God because that’s how God sees me. While it’s okay that you see what I do, God sees who I am! The Bible says
“For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.” – 2 Corinthians 5:21 NLT
We were made right with God through Christ and we keep being right with God through Christ. When God said, “this is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased…” It applied to us also! God showed that he is pleased with Jesus so that when he becomes our life, we will be rest assured that he is pleased with us! If our life is Christ, then God is pleased with us!
You are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. The more you are aware of your identity, the more you act accordingly as who you are. Knowing that you are a prince makes you act less of a servant. The reason you are still fighting a lot of weaknesses is that you may not have known whom God has made you become. Some knowledge can destroy addictions!
Don’t let the devil limit you with sin consciousness. Focus on what the word says, you may not feel like it but go ahead and live it till you start feeling it!
Put on the word of God as your lens and start seeing through the lens of his word. This way, you see yourself exactly the way God sees you.
