UNDERSTANDING THE WORD OF GOD

Many times we hear words like “study the word, read the word…” And we query “what is the word?” Is it just the Bible? Or some sort of precise words that were passed down to the Prophets? Is there more to the word than what has been written in the Bible? Unless you know what the word is, you may not know what to expect from the word and you may end up living on assumptions. There is no point assuming that we know; if you don’t know it, you don’t know it.

The word is the message from God that unveils or reveals God’s will, ideas, plans, objectives and pursuance, to bring men into and foster association and intimacy with Him in love. The word is God’s absolute truth, with a content that produces enough power to establish His image and character into the lives of those who hear and receive that word by believing it. The content of God’s word is the epitome of Christ’s revelations, provisions and instructions. The word is apparently for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction and training in righteousness. Concerning the Scriptures which contains the written word of God, the Bible says in 2 Timothy 3:16-17

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”

God’s word is the only way God prepares us and empower us to do every good work which has already been carried out in our Spirit.

Knowing what God’s word is will tailor your approach to the word; it will not be a general approach because it isn’t just another best seller in the market like every other book but God’s word! The word is beyond what we see in the pages of the Bible, it extends to the revelations of the word as it concerns you which however isn’t independent of the written word! The word isn’t the letter to Israelites but also God’s word of love to you. This is very important to know because until God’s word becomes very personal to you, it honestly will not make so many senses.

The core of Christianity will never be appreciated when we are uninformed of the word. The course becomes empty when we refer the word to just another book! The amazing thing is that the Word became flesh and walked among men! The Bible says in John 1:1

“In the beginning, the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

Do you see that? The word of God existed before the beginning, the word of God was with God and the big shocker is that the word of God is God Himself! Understand this, when you ask someone to get you a cup and the person agrees, he or she is acting on your word! Your word is you and if you are powerful, your words are powerful! Your words possess the totality of influence that you have, there isn’t any difference between you and your word, your word is you and in the same way, God’s word is God!

Jesus said something very interesting in John 8:32

“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Somewhere else in verse 36 of John 8, Jesus said

“So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.”

Jesus said the truth sets free, He also said the Son of man sets people free and they prevail in freedom. The question is this, what is this truth? What kind of freedom comes from this truth? Is it the same freedom that the Son of Man gives? Jesus gives us the answer in John 14:6 saying

“I am the way, the truth and the life…”

Jesus is the truth; He is God’s word which sets people free! No wonder the Bible says in Romans 1:6

“The Gospel is God’s power unto salvation.”

What is the gospel? Is it the book of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John? It is beyond it! The power in the Gospel is because of what it talks about! The Gospel is the good news about the truth, the good news about God’s words, and the good news about the freedom that comes from God’s word. Jesus is what makes the Gospel glorious! If not Jesus, the gospel would be stale news.

If we have established that the word is Jesus, it is also necessary to know that the word is life, the word is the way. Jesus said, the words that I speak to you, they are life! (John 6:63) It is that same word that called the dead back to life, it is that same word that commanded the blind eyes to open, it is that same word that declared the sick healed. Yet, the most amazing of it all is that the word declared you free! Jesus said, “you are free indeed!”

Why act as though you aren’t free when the word says you are free? Why do you want to entertain doubts about what the word has already said concerning you? Jesus declared on the cross “it is finished!” Why act as though there is still something you need to do? Concerning your salvation and the life you have received, the Bible says you are born of the word, of incorruptible seed, of that which cannot perish (1 Peter 1:23). No wonder Jesus said

“Whosoever believes shall not perish…” (John 3:16)

The word says you will not perish if you surrender to Jesus by believing in Him, why entertain fear? The word is Jesus, Jesus is God and if God doesn’t change, nothing will change about His word. His word can’t declare you saved today and declare you unsaved tomorrow! The word is God Himself and to receive God’s word is to receive Him! Remember we saw earlier that God’s word brings absolute transformation and yes, the word has transformed you from the inside out!

Don’t judge the word by your flesh and weaknesses. You are born again by the word, you are sustained by the word and you implement the character of God in the physical by acting on the word! God’s word has come alive in you as a believer in Christ Jesus! When God said “let there be light”, there was light! In the same way, when God’s word said: “you are free!” You are free indeed. God’s word doesn’t tell you can become, it makes you become! It calls forth into reality whatever it says. For example: when God’s word came to someone who was sick and said: “you are healed!” That person became healed by the reason of the word!

God’s word is not a promise to a believer, it is not a suggestion and it is not subject to your logics. Does it make sense that a virgin woman will conceive and give birth? Is it logical? Is there any sense in spitting on the ground, moulding sands and putting in the eyes of a blind man for sight and ordering him to go and wash? Can science or art explain that a man will die on the cross to save the world? It all doesn’t make sense because God’s word isn’t a product of this realm.

Hold fast to the word of God! It is able to keep you. As you behold it, it makes you what it talks about! It changes you from the inside out and it empowers you to manifest it’s power!
