LISTEN BEFORE SPEAKING | Alive! Daily Devotional

“To answer before listening– that is folly and shame.”

Proverbs 18:13

A lot of times people react angrily even before they get to pay attention to what happened. At other times people seem to judge and criticize so fast even before they try to know what happened and why it happened. That is not how to be human, we were not created to antagonize ourselves neither are we created to think and act carelessly. Everything about the human body clearly points out how God wants us to receive information before reacting to it. Get this:

1. It is shameful to speak before listening

2. It is foolishness to act before we think

God gave us two ears, two eyes, two nostrils, two hands but just one mouth and the reason is that we’ve got to hear well, see well, perceive well and feel well to a point of being sure before we can communicate it with our mouth. We don’t have two mouth so that we don’t talk from two sides. Our first approach to any situation shouldn’t be to speak, criticize or judge! We should pay attention first and listen. The ability to listen is golden and only the wise speak only after he has listened so well.

Every word we speak have the power to heal or break, to kill or make alive and we mustn’t be careless with words. Whether people made us angry or people need our opinion, we must not be in a hurry to speak! Take your time to listen, take your time to examine and think before you ever talk about it. If you’ve not thought about it, don’t say a word about it.

From today, I will be eager to listen and think but slow to speak. Every word that proceeds from my mouth are words carefully seasoned with grace and wisdom from God.

Precious Lord, may every word that I speak heal a broken heart, bring to life to a dead hope and bring peace to fights. Amen.
