“Do everything in love.” – 1 Corinthians 16:14
Sometimes we are motivated by other things to do what we do. There are people who give their Children good gifts hoping that when these children grow up, they would compensate them for all efforts made in training them. There are men who would care and support a woman simply because they want to have a way into her heart. So, there are so many reasons people do some good things they do. It is possible that some are loyal to their boss in the office just because they want an increase in their salary. However, there is only one perfect way to truly live on earth.
- Do everything in love.
Notice something here, the verse says that everything we do should be based on love. Not on good feelings, not on the need to get accepted, not because we are looking for a favour or because we want a good turn but simply on the basis of love. So, this means that when we want to criticize something and we look inwards to see that we weren’t coming up in love, we should retire from it. If there is any need to rebuke someone, it should be because of love. When we want to help others, we shouldn’t be doing it just for the sake of the future where we would need their own help. Love should be the motive. In 1 Corinthians 13 where Paul talked so much on love, we see that so many great things can be done without love. However, God wants everything we do to be with the motive of love.
POINT TO NOTE
Jesus said in John 13:34-35 “So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.” Love reflects the true character of God which we clearly saw in Jesus. It is by this love that we show the world who Jesus is. When we say that “God is love” we have to also show it by the way we live. The big question is, how do we love? Love, in the Bible sense, gives but expects nothing in return. We must follow God’s pattern to be kind, forgiving, patient and peaceful.
“The love of God has been shed abroad in my heart. Therefore, I live a life of love all day. I chose to love rather than hate. I choose to correct rather than judge and I choose to pray for my enemies rather than seek vengeance.”
Thank you, precious Lord, for reminding me that by loving, I am showing you to the world.
