“Jesus replied, ‘And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?’” – Matthew 15:3
We have always come across the Vox populi, vox Dei which means “the voice of the people is the voice of God” but that is not true. It is as untrue as saying that your Android tablet is an iPad. Sometimes, we allow our personal sentiments and our attachments to human traditions to speak louder than God’s word. We often present ourselves as Christians but bend over popular opinions that are against God’s word so that we don’t seem like the odd one out. Jesus was against this very mess which the Jewish leaders had gotten into. Get this:
1. Popular statements aren’t a match for God’s word.
2. If you are on the Lord’s side, stand there.
Some of us are Christians but we also find it easy to look down on women because it is an indoctrination of tradition and we don’t want to be the odd person! It is easier to judge people based on where they come from just because it is a way of life that we were physically born into but as Christians, we are born again and in Christ, there is neither Jew nor Greek (Galatians 3:28), therefore, we must not see the white man as superior and the black man as inferior! In some part of Eastern Nigeria, some Christians still discriminate against certain people based on the Osu caste system because they feel they must observe their traditions. We must make a decision, to either stand with Christ by standing in His word or stand with the world by standing in our traditions.
POINT TO NOTE
If our traditions couldn’t save us or make us better people, why go back to it? There are also new traditions today like abortion, homosexualism, nationalism and all manner of unbiblical practices that shakes the fabrics of humanity which God designed to be the expression of His beauty; we must not for the sake of being accepted by popular opinions and by the big names undermine God’s word. However, in standing for Jesus, we also stand in love for those who disagree with us.
“I have been united with God and I am of same Spirit with Him. Therefore I choose to live by the dictates of God’s word rather than by the fallible words of men. Glory to God!”
Precious Lord, your word is life to me. Help me to understand and live by your word even in the heat of opposition. Amen.
