“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” ~ Ephesians 4:22-24
When you get someone who has lived in the ghetto for nearly 30 years and put him in a well-developed environment, he may find it very difficult to adjust to the kind of lifestyle in that environment which is obviously a big contrast to where he used to be. The truth is; he has been translated from the ghetto to the five start resident and the reality is that he must have some personal struggles and learn gradually how to live in such environment with good ethics. This is how it is for us as believers in Christ Jesus. Get this:
1. Your past life as a sinner doesn’t belong to you anymore.
2. The memories of your past life are still there.
3. You live the new life by learning and replacing what you previously had in mind.
It is possible for a thief who got born again to want to steal again and it is possible for those addictions of drugs and fornication to still come up. What then did Jesus did? He brought us salvation so that we can be saved on the account of His mercies while we learn to adjust our behaviours to align with the new life we have received. Being saved is one thing but putting off those old characters of sin is something God truly wants you to achieve through His strength already available in you.
POINT TO NOTE
Until you learn how to live like American, becoming a citizen of America doesn’t mean the character of Americans becomes automatically inborn you. You may need to learn how to speak, act and eat like Americans before you start exhibiting it. In the same way, God’s word especially the epistles are there for you to study and learn more about your new life in Christ. This is how your mind becomes renewed and you understand the characters of the Spirit that you already have and how to exhibit it. A king who doesn’t know about kingship may as well be living like a slave.
“Because I am in Christ, old things about me is passed away and all things have become new! I live a fulfilling life in Christ and I let God’s word teach me how to live like God because I have become like Him.”
Precious Lord, as I continue studying your word, may the eyes of my understanding continue to be enlightened that I may always know what is your perfect will for me. Amen
