“Anyone who wants to be the first must be the very last, and the servant of all” –Mark 9:35

It is one thing to be a boss and it is another thing to be a leader. Leadership is not something that comes from lording oneself or his opinion over another and we are in a world where true leadership has always been tested by followership. As much as a leader leads followers, followership is not the test of a true leader. We usually study how to get people to follow us but sometimes not how to lead. Very bad leaders and good leaders have always had followers but Jesus’ idea of leadership took entirely a new turn. Get this:

1. Every result starts with a process.

2. God wants you to grow into success.

3. A leader is, first of all, a servant.

Anyone who wants to be an effective leader that must fulfil the purpose of his or her calling must have the heart of a servant. A call to lead isn’t a call to flaunt our position and authority; it is a call to train others into serving exactly the way we serve. It makes no sense when parents teach their children about respect but does not respect other people and it makes no sense where a President is fighting corruption but is also practising corruption. For Jesus, leadership is a call to responsibility and not a title.

POINT TO NOTE

Jesus said if you desire to be the first, you should go ahead and be the last. To put it in other words “if you desire to be at the top, start from the floor.” Humility is just the word that summarizes it! The true leadership code is humility and in leadership, you don’t start by organizing people to get something done, you start by getting something done and training people to do exactly the same thing you do. Leadership isn’t a position for supervisors, you aren’t a leader if you are merely supervising and not serving. Jesus washed the feet of the disciples which is the lowliest thing to do for anyone at that time and He commanded them to replicate this as they exercise leadership. Do you want to be at the top? You must start from the lowliest point of life.

AFFIRMATION

“As one who has been endowed with the character of the Holy Spirit, I have the super-abounding ability to serve others and teach them how to serve and get things done with doing them myself.”

PRAYER

Thank you, Lord, for reminding me that I must walk in humility and serve others if I truly desire to reign in life.
