Jesus said in Matthew 10:8 “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.” Ministry is not for gain neither is it a profession. Ministry is a calling which we didn’t pay any price for. While you paid a price to be a doctor, God calls you freely for His use. Jesus was saying here “ministry isn’t for personal gain. It is a kingdom business and not personal business.”
In the proceeding verses, Jesus continued “Do not carry any gold or silver or copper in your belts. Take no bag for the road, or a second tunic, or sandals, or staff; for the worker is worthy of his provisions. Whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy and stay at his house until you move on. As you enter the house, greet its occupants. If the home is worthy, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. And if anyone will not welcome you or heed your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town. Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.”
This means the call to ministry is in no way a call to building wealth. The work of the ministry should in no way be a means of being among the top richest men in the world but rather a means of serving God’s people. However, we see something glaring in the above verses. Jesus was never saying a minister should not be supported. He said a minister can be given shelter and of course some kind of welfare that comes with it and Jesus also pointed out that when the minister isn’t welcomed, it is a sign of rejection and the minister should leave.
Now, the way to prove that we are receiving the ministry of someone is by ensuring they minister to us in the most comfortable way. It is not the duty of the minister to tell people how to be treated or force people to give but the duty of those who are receiving his ministry. When we do not provide housing, clothing, food and so on for our teachers, we are simply proving we are either ungrateful or he or she isn’t ministering to us.
Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 9:11 “If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you?” It is not too much to support our teachers with what they need. We aren’t actually paying for their ministry, we are simply being partners with him or her. There are people who make living from using false testimonies and false teachings to raise money for themselves, those ones are not ministers of the gospel. They are just using ministry as a cover for their theft.
The Bible says “Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honour, especially those who labour in preaching and teaching. For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, “The labourer deserves his wages.” – 1 Timothy 5:17–18
We are all ministers of the gospel but there are certain ministers whose responsibilities in the body takes more from them which even includes their ability to do anything else aside teaching the gospel and being used by God for the maturity of believers.
We may preach on the bus on our way to work and yet in our offices but these ones are doing more than that because they devote all their time not just for teaching but also for administrative purposes. Some responsibilities are more tasking than the other!
The Bible says concerning this, that they are worthy of double honour. Mark that line “…elders who rule well… especially those who LABOUR in preaching and teaching.” Labour here indicates those whose calling is very tasking that it is the only thing they labour for.
Over the years, there has been so much abuse in this regard and you see ministers of the gospel using ministry as a means of personal gain! That isn’t what the Bible teaches and all forms of flamboyance and lie-sponsored wealth isn’t godly. We cannot deny that these things are happening; you see a Pastor being materially richer than every single person in the assembly he leads and he lives a very luxurious and questionable life.
But, fake products doesn’t mean there isn’t any original product. Fake products cannot make the original ones fake. The gift of the Spirit isn’t for sale including its usage because we paid no money for it. When we financially support our teachers without coercion and emotional manipulations, we are simply saying “I recognize your labour to ensure that I grow in the knowledge of the word.”
The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 9:7 “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” It is your choice to give and you give what you have! Don’t let anyone get you scared anytime by saying if you don’t give a certain amount you will remain in the challenges you found yourself. It is a lie!
We know them by their fruits! When anyone makes ministry about money and begin to ask for seeds and all sort of giving so you can be blessed, mark them… They are them! A true minister is given to teaching and preaching the gospel and that is final. If you have to coerce people to give as a minister, you are stealing. Just do the work of the ministry… God is your paymaster.
