“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
– James 4:7
To hate the devil doesn’t automatically mean we have resisted him. To say “we bind you Satan!” doesn’t really mean we have been able to cage him. Adam and Eve were not reported to have been friends of the devil but he did not flee because they didn’t resist him. The devil doesn’t come in a manner that we will suddenly know he is the devil and the Bible says in 2 Corinthians 11:14 that he manifests in disguise as an angel of light! When we encounter him manifesting that way, how can we recognize it is the devil and resist him? Let’s consider this quickly
1. Only a submitted soul can resist the devil.
2. It is in obedience to God that the devil loses his hold.
3. The devil doesn’t stand a submitted soul.
Whether we are able to recognize it is the devil or not, as long as we are submitted to God, the devil stays resisted and he flees from us. When we obey God’s word and walk in the light of it, we can never walk in darkness and we can never give the devil any room to thrive around us. The devil may start out well but will definitely not lead you well! Remember he started out well with Eve just to make her feel he is in right standing with God. Keep your focus on God’s word and obey it even when there seems to be a logical reason justifying a little disobedience.
POINT TO NOTE
We don’t resist him by shouting “fire on the devil.” We resist him by being submissive to God, by living in obedience to His word. To walk in the light is to never walk in darkness.
“I walk in obedience to God’s word. I live the life of a doer and therefore I can never walk in darkness! The devil has nothing in me and therefore remains alienated from me! Hallelujah!”
Precious Lord, I reaffirm my submission to you and your word.
