“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but does not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
– 1 Corinthians 13:1-3
Love is the greatest gift of all, the greatest of all the gift of the Spirit and the only expression that clearly portray the true character of God. God wants everything we do as believers to be founded on the motive of love. There are lots of people who do charity works today simply because there are opportunities they are looking for; maybe, a recognition award. There are people who would show care and support because they believe they would benefit something in the end and therefore a lot of care and concerns can be expressed without love as the motive. There are also people who want to express the power of God and raise even the dead just because they want to prove a point.
1. The gifts of the Spirit can be manifested without love.
2. The gift of the Spirit can only serve its purpose with love.
3. True gain is in true love.
From what Paul wrote we can understand that speaking in tongues, being highly charismatic, expressing the gift of prophecy, having deep revelation knowledge and expressing huge faith will all amount to nothing when we do not do these things in love. This means charity can be done with pride but not for love, prophecy can happen with pride and not based on love but all the expressions of the Spirit make sense only in love. There are many Christians who appear really pious and serious with spiritual things but love is still lacking from their motives. The gifts of the Spirit are meant to spice up our love walk and not function independently of them.
POINT TO NOTE
Seeing God’s power at work in you isn’t a sign that everything is okay with you, being Charismatic and giving accurate prophecies doesn’t mean you are living like Jesus. As a believer, you have been gifted with those and may manifest them even without a renewed heart. But it is only in love that you are able to fulfill God’s purpose and do His will. The proof of a renewed heart is the degree to which love is expressed.
“I have chosen to walk in love just like Jesus. I have chosen to give up my pride and put others first. I have chosen to let love be the motive of everything I do. I have chosen to be famous for love.”
Heavenly Father, teach me every day to walk in love, to live a life that expresses your true nature so that I can use your gifts correctly.
