What exactly did Jesus pay for? When we say Jesus paid it all, what exactly are we talking about? Yea, I know Jesus didn’t pay for our burger and cheese! I know He didn’t pay for our house rent and other material stuffs! When you are in debt and you tell your debtor “Jesus paid it all. Go take it on the cross” he might give you a heavy punch on your cheek! Jesus may not have paid for your school fees but all things required of you by the law God gave has been paid for! All the things required for your spiritual stability has been paid for and there is no dime that has not been paid for!
What actually bridged us from accessing God’s best for us was the nature of sin but by the virtue of Salvation, Jesus paid the ultimate price and united us with God. The Bible says in Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Because Jesus paid for the wages of our sins, we have received the gift of eternal life! It wouldn’t have been a gift if we had anything to pay for! This eternal life isn’t just about remission of sin, we were forgiven but beyond that, God gave us His life! It is the life of God in us that the Bible calls “eternal life.” How about the anointing? Was it all inclusive?
One great thing Jesus did to assure us of our security in Him is that He sealed the deal with His own Spirit! The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 “Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God, who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge.” The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Jesus and it is His way of being in us forever! God, by Jesus have established us but didn’t leave us to ourselves, He also anointed us! I want us to carefully consider the word “anointed” here! The anointing God has given us is complete, it is not a prayer point! God have anointed us and sealed us! Do you know what it means to fill up a product container with the contents and seal it? Do you know why it is sealed? The anointing cannot be adulterated and that seal is forever! The Holy Spirit has been given to us as a pledge too!
Why do I have to say this? The anointing is not something you can buy with a price! You cannot buy it with your nice character, your fervent prayers, your meditations, your fasting and all of that! The anointing has been given and no man can pay any price for it! There are lots of popular words in the Church today that doesn’t even exist in the scriptures! We have used these words to hype certain beliefs, practices and teachings that aren’t consistent with what God has revealed to us. We would usually hear people say “don’t envy my anointing because you may not be able to pay the price that I paid for it!” And I am wondered to ask “which anointing? Which price? Can you ever pay the price?” There is nowhere in the Bible one had to pay the price for the anointing! It is not something you can pay with money neither is it something you can earn by merit!
When the Bible says that God has anointed you, it means that God have sanctified you and set you apart for His own use! Anointing comes from the root word “anoint” and it means to be set apart! To be made sacred! God has made you sacred for His own use and it is not something you were able to afford but something God wanted to do with you. In the Old Testament, Prophets, Kings, Judges and Priests had to be consecrated and set apart for the purpose of their office and calling! All of those were pointing to Christ Jesus and what He was coming to do! The word “Christ” means the anointed one, the anointed one here indicates the one with all of the anointing! Jesus fulfilled all of the offices in the Old Testament, He is the carrier of all of the anointing! Now this is not what anyone could pay for except Jesus!
You cannot understand the Grace of God and still use that remark of “paying the price for the anointing of God.” Grace means God’s riches at Christ’s expense! What is it you can do to afford the anointing of God? How much fasting can you do? You may fast even more than Jesus, you may sow seeds in the lives of many “big men” of God but you cannot afford the cost! This is what Jesus gave His life for! To say “you paid the price for the anointing” means insulting what Jesus did on that cross! The only thing we could afford was death, we had sinned just enough to afford death as wages but the eternal life which contains everything there is God has to give was given as a gift to us! How then can someone stand on this truth and then declare “I paid the price for the anointing I am carrying!” This is arrogance to the highest order!
The Bible says in John 7:37-38
“If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said: ‘Streams of living water will flow from within him.’” He was speaking about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. For the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.”
Jesus quoted the prophecy in Isaiah 55:1 which says “Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink–even if you have no money! Come, take your choice of wine or milk–it’s all free!” Can you see that? We are in the days of the Spirit! The Bible says it is free! The Spirit has been freely given and the Bible records that anyone who believes in Jesus will receive this living water flowing within them! I love how it was put in the Prophecy, you can make your choice whether it is water, milk, wine or honey!
Your choice will not affect the pricing, it is free and it was paid for by Jesus! I know people pray, fast and do many exercises just because they want to pay the price but how much is enough? How much anointing can you afford? What can beat the price Jesus already paid? You want to buy off the credit from Jesus? There is no bill that has not being paid for and God isn’t offering any more payment voucher! It got exhausted in Jesus.
You cannot even afford the tiny display of divine flame but you can only grow in capacity to handle what God has released to you! You don’t grow the anointing, you increase in anointing. There are several things you might do that helps you build capacity to use what God has released to you! Ignorant men cannot exercise the gifts and the power of God in them and so they will need to subject themselves to the study of the word of God, not to pay any price but to build capacity in the physical so that they can access God’s best for them. Spiritual exercises can help you build such capacities but they are not worth the price for the anointing! Your faithfulness in the little helps you go further into what God has already given!
When you give birth to a child, he doesn’t have to buy a bigger heart as he grow up, he doesn’t have to buy a bigger physical life! Everything is intact and he grows in them! It will be arrogance of the highest order to say “you paid the price.” Growing in capacity and paying the price aren’t the same thing, they aren’t in any way related! You need to understand the line, your struggles in life and even persecutions are building blocks, God is converting every negativity to building blocks for you, He is building you up with everything that comes around.
The Bible says in 1 Peter 1:6-7 ” In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed.”
You don’t pride in your sufferings, you rejoice in them! You don’t consider them as the price you are paying for the anointing! They are building blocks! The problem with misunderstanding these things as paying the price is that it also confuses young believers into thinking it is man who affords the anointing! Oh no, nobody can afford it and there is none available for sale. You have it already as a believer.
The Bible says in 1 John 2:20 “But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth” You read that? You have an anointing already, you have been consecrated and you can now live as consecrated!
The life you live now isn’t to get consecrated but because you are consecrated! Pray because the price has been paid and not because you want to pay a price, fast because you want to focus on what Jesus finished on the cross and not because you have an extra price to pay. Like I said earlier, Jesus paid it all and there no payment vouchers left!
