BELIEVERS | THE LIGHT & SALT OF THE WORLD

:
To be light of the world is way more than just being a shining element in the world. It means being the medium of light for the entire world. Without the believer, the world remains in darkness! In fact, to be light of the world means the sustenance of this world is dependent on us. To put it in a better perspective, we are the real eyes with which the world ought to see and without us the world is in absolute darkness! We are the reason behind the preservation of this earth! This also says the same thing when the word says we are the salt of the earth! We bring taste to life, without us the world becomes tasteless. It would be put this way, “we give life in this world a meaning!”
:
Jesus didn’t call us a light or salt in the world! He called us the light and the salt of the world! This means the only kind of light and taste we produce is the only kind of light and taste the world is dependent on. However, this speaks more about what Jesus has done is us and what He expects us to do in the world. Making us the light and salt of the world means that He has put us in His place to continue what He has come to do. In Psalms 119:105, the Bible says “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” Now, first we see that God’s word is what brings direction and without the word direction is lacking. So what about it? What is the connection between God’s word being the light and us being the light of the world? You’ll be able to connect all of this if you read patiently.
:
Jesus is the word of God which became flesh! The Bible says concerning Jesus in John 1:14 “So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.” Jesus is the personification of God’s word; the word of God in the figure of man! It will still be correct if we take the Psalmist words and put it this way “Jesus is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” It will make more sense if we put it using the perspective of the New Creation realities and it would read “Jesus is the lamp for my feet, the light on my path.” Jesus said in John 8:12 “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Now you see that? Jesus is that same word that has been the light to the feet of God’s faithful in the time past! No wonder He said “before Abraham, I am.” (John 8:58)
:
When we go back to the Psalmist again, we will see something profound that he said which is “The Lord is my light and my salvation…” (Psalm 27:1) This means God is his direction and the one mighty to save! Doesn’t this clearly define what Jesus came to do? Jesus brought salvation and also brought direction by His Spirit which is the Holy Spirit. And then, how does this concern the believer being the light of the world when Jesus has initially said same thing about Himself?
:
In a very simple statement, Jesus has put us in His place and everything Jesus is, is who we are too! In John 8:12, Jesus didn’t end by saying that He is the light of the world but He continued by saying that whosoever follow Him will never walk in darkness but have the light of life! He didn’t just say we will walk in light but said we will have the light of life! Jesus said to His disciples in John 12:36 “Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.” He said this before His death but in the now, anyone that believes in Jesus has Jesus and have become children of light! We are Children of light and children of a lion cannot grow into something less than lion! It is in this regard that we are the people the world depends on for sight! Actually, we are carriers of God’s presence and the world ought to see it, they are depending on us!
:
Light isn’t a label, it is an agent that stimulates sight and brings everything into visibility! When Jesus said we are the light of the world He also said “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16) The reason Jesus made us lights of the world and to shine in His own capacity is not to exhibit some kind of new tech, it is so that the world can see acts of righteousness and give glory to God! Our shinning doesn’t bring glory to self but to God! I remember one time I went to purchase something and my change was so much over paid! I walked out of the shop and realized it and two thoughts came! One said maybe it’s God’s way of blessing me and another said “shine the light!” I knew God’s blessings wouldn’t come with sorrow to another person and so I walked back to the shop and returned the money. She was excited and I told her “God said I should return it.” I know it ended in giving God glory!
:
When Jesus said “let your light shine…” it means one can be the light and never shine! But He said we should allow the light to shine, it is our duty to allow it shine! God cannot force the light to shine out of us but He has made us lights and we ought to shine! The Bible says in 1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. ” You see that, right? God has put us in the position of priests to serve Him and be living sacrifices to Him! We have been authorized to worship Him and until one is put into this priesthood, he can’t worship God! The duty of us as priests is clearly written in that same verse and that duty is to declare the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His wonderful light! We have been called into God’s wonderful light and nothing changes that! But then, we must shine in this capacity for people to see the person of God in us!
:
To shine means to express and bring something into visibility. The world depends on us to understand the person of Jesus, they depend on us to see what God would do in every given situation. Previously we see that Jesus has put us in His place and therefore we must consciously put Jesus on the display. Love is the way to shine! There is no other way to shine than loving people both sinners and our enemies! The Bible says in Philippians 2:15 “that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,” it is among a crooked and twisted generation that we shine like lights! It is through us that they actually see Jesus and surrender to Him. Just like Jesus said “if you have seen me, you have seen God.” We can confidently say “if you have seen me, you have seen Jesus.” It is in the formation of Christ in us that we progress in the capacity with which we shine. God wants us to make progress and walk in righteousness. Being a believer is nice but God wants us to pass that level of just believing and also start doing! If darkness is still lurking around where we are, it means we aren’t shinning yet! It is not right that you are still surrounded by very immoral people and you aren’t doing anything about it, it is also not right that you are born again but still acting like a sinner! You must shine and you also ought to give a better taste to people.
:
The ultimate way to shine this light is to open the eyes of unbelievers with the preaching and showing of God’s love, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me (Act 26:18). By the sharing of the gospel, we are making Jesus known and we are exposing His love to our audience. Now that you are saved, go and shine!
