WHAT LOVE MADE HIM DO

:
I am not sure there has been a clearer portray of the agony he went through! Yea, the movie, Passion of Christ did what was humanly possible to give us a picture of the suffering of Jesus but I can’t say that was all to it, we can’t feel the pains Jesus felt, we can’t see the agony and the hell he saw in the cruel hands of those who crucified him! We can’t tell how the voice of those who were supposed to love Him but cry “crucify Him!” sounded in His ears! Whatever it was Jesus saw and felt on that cross, no media production has really been able to bring the very accurate picture of it! Yes, we can only try but we can’t express the extent of His suffering.

This was same Jesus who turned water into wine and people drank! Well, just maybe they never knew Jesus did that, what about other beautiful things Jesus did in their midst? Jesus did lots of good and none of bad, He showed them the higher life, something they had never seen before. Jesus went to Capernaum and healed a politician’s son and the servant of another, how about the mad men He delivered from the evil Spirit in the same city and many that were delivered from oppression? How about the daughter of Jairus that was raised from the dead? The widow’s son too? How about feeding of more than five thousand people? Jesus did so many miracles that were known by all! It wasn’t a secret, they all witnessed most of it! He raised the dead, made the blind see, made the lame walk, made the dumb speak, made the deaf hear and lots of other miracles recorded in the Bible. John even wrote saying “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.” (John 21:25) But after all these, the multitudes that were affected by the good deeds of Jesus watched Him being nailed on the cross. That in itself was enough agony and anyway, even if they tried, they wouldn’t have been able to rescue Jesus! It was a divine assignment that even the devil wouldn’t stop. It was God that gave them power over Jesus that He would be crucified!

What exactly made Jesus allow Himself face such humiliation? What exactly made Jesus fix and heal the ear of one who came to arrest Him and even after healing that soldier they were not moved to let Jesus be? What exactly made Jesus endure to the end, taking up all the shame and even asking that those who crucify Him experience forgiveness? What manner of man was Jesus? Well, the Bible says it was love that brought Jesus (John 3:16). Love made Jesus come dwell with mortal men, love made Jesus accept the extreme shame of the cross! What a pain He endured, He who have power to do whatever He wanted! He is the highest command in heaven, He would say a thing and it is established and in the midst of all the scorn He established forgiveness for people who never asked for it, people who seemed unrepentant! When someone has seen the miracles first hand and still never believe, what else would make them believe? Jesus didn’t put it into account, He established their forgiveness. He was spat upon, torn open, pierced on every side, laughed and mocked by people He healed their brethren, people He fed and even the soldier He fixed his ears.

Just went upon that cross just for love! He knew that would be the end of our enslavement, it was too hard to bear but He took it upon Himself, leaving His divine privileges so that He can actually experience the suffering. It was on that old rugged cross that He was nailed, the long nails were pierced through his wrist and not His palms as many thought, the crown of strong thorns were pressed into his head. What a shame it was to be crucified alongside criminals, these criminals didn’t go through half of what He went through, they were only nailed to the cross but all of what Jesus experienced they never experienced it. They didn’t know what it was like to leave divine privileges and face cruel treatment from their own creation! In fact, one of the criminals on the cross humiliated Jesus but Jesus didn’t say “you idiot! You don’t know what I am on this cross for?” Love was just all over Him, love made Him pull through.

We have nice Church buildings today with cross made of gold and diamond pendant, crosses so beautiful that it gives us the wrong imagination of what the crucifixion of Jesus looked like. The cross on which Jesus was crucified and the manner by which Jesus was rough handled was meant to bring more agony, more pains and humiliation. There was no stage of that crucifixion that was lighter than the former, as each stage progressed, it got more horrible! The crucifixion of Jesus never looked as nice as those gold artistic fanciful cross we find in Church… It was a very horrible sight to behold. So horrible that we wouldn’t want to wear it round on our necks!

And yes, Jesus went through this shame and humiliation just because of love. While all these were happening, he endured because of love. Yes, Jesus is no longer on that cross, He went to the grave but if you go there to look for Him, you wouldn’t find Him! Only the shroud was left of Him, He resurrected. But then, why did Jesus had to die? Wouldn’t God have just declared us non-guilty and save Jesus from such humiliation? Well, the punishment for sin was death as Romans 6:23 explained, it was important that death for sin must occur because that was how God declared it, that the soul that sin shall die! God made it that He who knew no sin would become sin on our behalf that we can become the righteousness of God!” God’s judgment on sin was death but He also promised us the perfect lamb that could bear the sins of the world! Jesus happened to be that lamb. Only Jesus had the ability to pay the price for our sins! Being the only innocent man left, dying for our sake was enough justice! Anyone who trusts God on this, keys into what Jesus has done.
