IGNITE | PASSION FOR CHRIST

:
Have you wondered how the most sophisticated things in this world came to be? How people thought of going to the moon and really went to the moon? How people left their comforts to sojourn in foreign lands, risking their lives just to share their belief with others? How the most magnificent buildings and artistic works came to be? I’d say it was never because they’ve got the skills; it is because they’ve got passion. Passion for something would make you gain skill and take mastery of it. There is not a single achievement done in this world where passion never played a role. Passion is what makes life adventurous, it brings vibes and a lot of meaning into a once very quiet life. Passion is what makes men think out of the box and make the impossible very possible. Man wouldn’t have outrun the horses, man wouldn’t have flown higher than the eagles, and man wouldn’t have gone underwater inside the very deep and scary oceans but passion turn men into something else. Today we have speedy cars, airplanes, submarines and all that which was birthed by passion to see these things happen. God never put boundaries in what man would find possible, it is only impossible when there is no passion for it. There is nothing a man has put passion into and never achieved it.
:
Nothing would motivate you enough to get up in the morning and go out cheerfully to do something great! Without passion you’d want to stay on the bed forever because there isn’t any excitement to jerk you off the bed. What a boredom life becomes when there is no passion. A passionless man is an idle man because there is every reason to be idle when there is no passion. Passion is effects of emotions that have been committed into something and God designed man to be passionate about anything he wants to be passionate about. Passion makes people break records and God wants us to always reach our full potentials.
:
Passion isn’t an accidental pump of emotions; people deliberately or in-deliberately develop passion for something. In Mark 11:30, Jesus said to the man who asked him what the greatest commandment was and Jesus said “Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart.” And the real meaning of that is “Love God passionately.” In other words, Jesus was telling this man that the best thing anyone could do in life is to develop passion for God. Jesus is the only way to God, Jesus is the same as God other than He manifested in the flesh and our commitment to Jesus is commitment to God, so Jesus was talking about loving Him. Let’s get it, I am not saying Jesus is an alternative to God, I am saying that God doesn’t exist outside Jesus (John 1:2). To love with your heart isn’t to love when you feel like; it is not to love when things are fine! It is to invest your emotions intentionally into your relationship with Jesus. He doesn’t want a cold relationship neither does He want a lukewarm affair. God wants us to live passionately. Colossians 3:23 made a similar remark too saying “Whatever you do, do it with all your heart as unto the Lord and not unto men”, you see that? God wants you to live a passionate life about everything. To be passionate about God and to be religious about God are two parallel lines that never meet but you can’t be passionate about God and not see folks call you a freak! Oh yes, you should be a freak! You should be so passionate for Christ that it is evident to as far as your social media walls.
:
Sometimes, people get distracted by friends and their relationships, some get distracted by their wonderful career, some get distracted by the money they had made and they suddenly start loosing passion for God because all those while they had been serving themselves and not God. But there is usually a way to ignite this fire when it seems to be going off. The Bible says in Romans12:1 “never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor.” I’d like you to look at those words again. The Bible says “keep…” which means “stay passionate”, it is not something that occurs on its own, you put your effort in staying passionate about God. People can actually become less passionate about something when they have developed passion for something else. No wonder Jesus said you can’t love God and mamon at the same time! One has to give way because passion faces one direction alone! Jesus said somewhere in Revelations “return to your first love.” It is a call to reignite our passion for Him. Look at couples who are newly in love, it is usually so amazing and they seem to like every mess of theirs but watch it, sometimes it seem that love is beginning to fade. Well, it isn’t fading just that they aren’t putting the required effort into making it work There are efforts you need to put into reigniting your passion for God.
:
This article isn’t a teaching to explain why you should be passionate about God but let me quickly say that the only way to reach your full potential in Christ is to have passion for Him! Why? Only Him can lead you on the path of fulfilling His desires. The psalmist says “He leads me in the path of righteousness,” you can’t follow as He leads when passion is missing. The main purpose of this teaching is to explain how you can maintain your passion for Christ and even increase in that passion. I believe anyone who has read to this moment is truly ready for this…
:
I’d be talking about things that compete with our passion for God and maybe you see where you need to readjust.
CROWD: So many years ago I had a female friend, she had a boyfriend but she liked me and would always want us to talk. That time, I used to be a member of a Christian youth ministry and I was so committed to it. Each time we talked, I would always talk about Jesus and one day she said to me “can you just stop talking about Jesus and Church anytime we talk? Can you stop?” At first, I thought it was alright to do what she said but at a time I realized my prayer life, my passion for souls and the things of God were experiencing serious conflict with that mere friendship, I knew it was not worth it. Many people engage in relationships that distract them from God. I know there are relationships that get you so much serious with God but there are friends, meetings and activities that kill passion for God. You can’t be working in a brothel and still want to maintain a very passionate relationship with God. Sometimes you must withdraw from the crowd. The social media could be a crowd, you may be too engaged on the social media that you have less time for God, you may actually be preaching the word on social media and you’re always busy responding to comments and checking the likes. You’re always giving and not receiving. It can affect your passion because your attention would move from God to the people. The crowd can be the movies you’re given to, the comedy or songs you watch everyday to the point they are all that flies in your head when you are idle. I haven’t said you should have fun, I do too and I already have s movie on schedule as I am typing this but I am saying we should never give room to be consumed by these things.
:
BUSY-NESS & LAZINESS: I always tell people that busy-ness is when we work at the expense of rest and laziness is when we rest at the expense of work. A lot of people are busy, working extremely hard to make ends meet but they never devote anytime to rest. I hear motivational speakers all the time say its wrong to sleep more than two hours in everyday 24 hours but I don’t want to believe that at all and I’d tell you they are very wrong with that kind of motivation and you’d break down if you listen to them. The Bible already made it clear that there are times for rest. God wants you to rest as much as you work. The Bible says in Psalm 127:2 “It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so He giveth His beloved sleep.” It is needless rising early and working into the midnight, it will only produce a bread of sorrow. God blesses those He love with sleep and the Bible says God so love the world (John 3:16). He wouldn’t force you to doze off, you’re the one to enjoy this wonderful thing called “sleep,” by your own intentions. Laziness also prevents people from exercising themselves spiritually. A lot of folks know they need time to pray, they know there are pressing issues they need to pray about, they know they need some time to study the word of God but they keep procrastinating it because they are always tired, they can’t get out of their comfort zones, they can’t handle the distractions! The Bible says in 1 Timothy 4:7 “Take the time and trouble to keep yourself spiritually fit” It is a duty you’ve got to play, it has to take your time, it has to take your comforts at times because passion doesn’t respect comfort zones. You must create quality time to study, pray and even fellowship with other believers.
:
LACK OF FELLOWSHIP: Anytime I realize my passion is watering down, one of the things I do aside checking my prayer life is checking my commitment to the fellowship of brethren. Fellowship is one way to catch the fire from others because you are motivated unto good works, motivated to pray and even encouraged of the word. The Bible says we shouldn’t neglect the gathering of the saints (Hebrews 10:25) and I can remember David declaring in the Old Testament that he is glad when he is comes to the temple (Psalm 122:1). This is because even if you had loosed the zeal to study on your own, the zeal to pray or do any spiritual exercises on your own; you would be in fellowship where you are encouraged to do it. Great men are made in meetings. You can’t be a passionate believer when you are busy missing Church services. Don’t rest on the excuses such as “God will not judge you for not attending Church services,” you’re probably the one hurting yourself anyway. Fellowship gives you that opportunity to pray with others, to study with others and to go home with a new spark for the bible says that iron sharpens iron! (Proverbs 27:17) In fellowship you are refreshed and reignited. Nothing reignites much more than fellowship. In Hebrews 10 the Bible talks about encouraging one another unto good works. This can only be done in fellowship. It is also in fellowship that you begin to find where your ministry is, God has called each and every one of us into specific ministries. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 7 “Each one should live his life with the gifts that the Lord has given him.” God wants you to live out the gifts bestowed on you. How do I know God wasn’t talking about your personal career choices here? Because I am sure no career choices will use a very high percentage of your gifts! God wants you to use it in ministry for we have been called into the ministry of reconciliation. So it’s not just enough to be in fellowship, we should be committed in fellowship too. If you can’t fellowship, you obviously can’t reach out to others too because fellowship is a place of adequate discipleship.
:
INCONSISTENT PRAYER LIFE: One thing can lead to another, something else could affect your prayer life and in turn, your prayer life can affect your passion. Whatever you do over time determines where your passion is channeled to. One thing prayer especially that which we pray in the Spirit does is that it edifies us (1 Corinthians 14:4); it builds us up and prepare us for more! Paul encouraged the Corinthians to pray in tongues always because it builds them up and Jude 1:20 also talks up building up our most holy faith. When you are consistent with praying, you’re building up your most Holy Faith. When you pray, you’re communing with God and He is dropping words in your Spirit which translates into your emotions and affect them. One thing I also do when my passion becomes questionable is to pray in the Spirit, not when I feel like but I just pray and pray until I forget that I never felt like praying! You need to subject your flesh to these spiritual exercises.

INCONSISTENT STUDY OF THE WORD: Lot of believers are not consistent with their commitment to the study of the word of God. God’s word as written in the Bible is God talking to us and we cannot know more of God’s purpose when we do not allow Him to speak to us. When we are given to the word with all diligence, we are exposing our mind to be affected by the breath of His word because only His word can renew our minds. It is good to hear the word from ministers but it is always better to study the word for ourselves. While the Holy Spirit can always speak to us through teachers of the word, He also wants to speak to our individual needs, He wants to communicate to us as His children. The Bible contains the mind of God (1 Timothy 3:16) and as we keep beholding this word, we continue to be changed into God’s very image, we continue to conform and we continue to grow. God wants us to come to that point where act the word without thinking! The Bible says in James 1:22 that we should be doers of the word as we hear it! It takes passion to do something and when you’re committed to the study of that word, you see yourself doing what it says.
UNRIGHTEOUS HABITS: Like I had said earlier, anything you do overtime becomes a habit and habits aren’t easy to overcome. This is why you ought to make good living a habit. Sin can’t destroy your passion for God because sin is a reproach! If righteousness exalts a nation, it means you can be exalted for righteous living! In Psalm 38:4 & 6 we can see clearly that sin is a burden. The Bible says we should present our bodies as living sacrifice, holy and acceptable! Of course Christ is our righteousness but we must let it reflect on the outside because God needs our body to function here on earth. You are the one to present your body as a living sacrifice! Living in sin is not God’s will for us, He wants us to live out His fullness. You cannot get addicted to immoral and unedifying habits and you still think it can go well with your spiritual life, you’ve got to get rid of all filthiness and ultimately, you’ve got to deal with sin consciousness. When you fall, do well to get up and keep moving. Don’t sit there thinking all is gone and mourning your downfall! God has already forgiven you from the very beginning but you appropriate that forgiveness by agreeing with Him. The Bible says in 1 John 1:9 says “If we confess our sins He [God] can be trusted to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Now, I really need you to grasp the truth here. The original Greek word translated as confess here means “agreeing with what has already been said.” This means if you agree with what God has already said concerning your sins, you’d appropriate God’s forgiveness. What has been said? The Bible says the wages of sin is death but God’s gift is eternal life. The Bible says when you believe, you are saved (John 3:16). You’ve got to agree with God and free yourself of guilt consciousness. The Bible also says “approach the throne of grace with boldness that you might obtain mercy in the time of need,” You see? You approach with confidence. When you’re free from guilt, your passion for God is lit! One of the habits you must deal with is unforgiveness! Oh yes! I have done a teaching on that previously and you’d need to find it and read. It’s available on George’s Diary. Living a life of love and righteousness increases your passion because it keeps you fit!
While there are lots of other ways one would ignite passion for Christ, I believe the 6 points listed above are very important and a step in the right direction. I know fasting also has its place, I know a lot of others things has it’s place but I deliberately listed just this five because they are major and they deal with distractions and commitment to making it work. A lot of people gather in a building asking the Lord “set my heart on fire for you”, they say this in sincerity but it is not enough to just pray that our hearts be set on fire, we need to put an effort. We have a role to play in igniting our passion for Christ. Well, praying that pur hearts be set on fire is one, it gets our emotions ready but if we leave it at that, nothing happens except feeling a spark for fee minutes or even days and getting very frozen the next day. Like Romans 12:1 says ” KEEP your spiritual fervor,” you’ve got to maintain that frequency and never let it go off! Set your heart aflame for Christ by putting in your heart into whatever it is Christ represents. Don’t be comfortable with average, average is near to nothing! There was no average Christian who did extraordinary things… Are you interested in doing the extraordinary? Then go above average!
