HEALTH | THE CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE

:
Man is a Spirit with a soul in a body (1 Corinthians 2:11). Your body is what gives you license to function on earth and fulfill God’s given purpose. Your body is God’s design but it’s your responsibility to maintain it. You must take care of your body to live a healthy life! The body can be affected by unhealthy living, when you don’t stay clean and eat properly. After the fall of Adam in the Garden, the body loosed it’s perfection. Jesus didn’t come to save the body but to regenerate the Spirit of the man. So while we have a perfect Spirit, our body which is the earthen vessels aren’t perfect. The Bible hints in Ecclesiastes 12:7 that the body will return to dust from where it was made but the Spirit which is God breathed will return to God. In other words, healthy living is a practice beneficial to the body.
:
The Bible says in 1 Timothy 4:8 “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” This further explains the distinctions between the body and the Spirit. Physical trainings which is bodily exercise has it’s value which lasts on earth while godliness has eternal value because it goes beyond our earthly living into the Spiritual realms. Because our Spirit needs our body to truly thrive on earth, the body must be taken care of and the values of physical training has to be enjoyed. The bible never said those little values aren’t important, Paul was putting up a balance! So while we maintain good health, we also live godly lives. Talking about the body, not the Spirit, the Bible says in 1 Corinthians 6:19 that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit which means that the body is a medium through which God is served on earth.
:
First, we know that our body isn’t independently our own because the Spirit that posses the body isn’t our own. We saw earlier that the body will go back to dust after serving it’s purpose but the Spirit in possession of it will go back to God. Secondly, we also know that as believers in Christ Jesus, we are subject to Him because He is our LORD and SAVIOUR and the bible says we are bought with a price. Isn’t this more reason to take care of our body knowing that we are taking care of God’s fleshy tool of service. Spirits were not commanded to preach the gospel because it is only with the body and to the body that the gospel can be communicated. The Body is like a decoder, without the decoder, signals cannot be received even though it’s everywhere! Without the body, the soul cannot become material. Knowing these things also gives you more reasons your body needs to be taken care of.
:
The body needs energy to function properly, concerning this God said to mankind in Genesis 1:29 “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.” He said again in Genesis 9:3 “Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.” God never designed the body to last forever and He provided ways by which we can stay healthy till the body fulfills its purpose. When people pride in their ability not to eat for days, they are only being ignorant and foolish. You shouldn’t be a glutton but you ought to eat well. God made all things available for our pleasure but He doesn’t want us to be consumed by it.
:
The Bible says in Psalm 104:15 “wine that gladdens human hearts, oil to make their faces shine, and bread that sustains their hearts.” This tells us God have our interest at heart! The drinks, essential oils, perfumes, products processed from plants and trees and foods made from them are all God’s gift to man. I like you to note that the Bible says bread sustains the heart which simply means we eat food so we stay healthy and not die of hunger.
:
Therefore it is important that you eat balanced diet to make up for every nutrition the body needs. Some people would also want to go for food supplements to make up for the diets they couldn’t get from the food available to them. Vegetables are great source of nutrients, you ought to make it a big deal. Irrespective of your schedule you can plan your meals and eat accordingly and responsibly. Jesus was hungry in the flesh, He was tasty in the flesh and He needed rest in the flesh! No amount of spirituality overrides the need to take care of the body. Your body is your mobile house here on earth, therefore you must keep it working!
:
You have to take precautionary measures when you find yourself in an unhealthy environment. Example is places infested with mosquitoes. Ensure to take certain measures of protecting your body because it is your responsibility to take care of it. No matter how much you know the Bible, you should use mosquito nets and use insecticides where necessary. It is foolishness to stay in danger when you can escape it. Jesus escaped danger even when He could command armies from heaven if He wanted to. The real you which is your Spirit can’t get sick but your body which is your place of function can seriously be affected by what you eat and do. When you eat unhealthy foods, drink unhealthy water and expose yourself to infections, you’d get sick no matter what you confess! Confession should be accompanied with right living! Confessions are meant to build a consciousness in you, they are not license to living carelessly and yet not experiencing issues. You can’t be addicted to caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and so on thinking you’d be okay! Those things has it’s place and it should be used in it’s place.
:
When you live right, you enjoy divine health! Good health is simply divine and God made everything our body would need available even before He made our body. I’d like to show you something about healthy living! During the times of the Bible, finding clean drinking water wasn’t as easy as we do these days because they would usually drink from a well, rivers and so on which could get contaminated. Timothy had usual stomach ache and infirmities, the Bible recorded it was usual and someone who sat under the tutelage of St. Paul would be expected to enjoy miracles at every giving time! But Paul noticed the cause of his infirmities, it was because of the kind of water he takes. So Paul recommended him to take wine sometimes instead of water because Wine is highly antioxidant. This is an example of healthy living!
:
When you get sick, believe God for your healing but never ever refute to take medications! The Bible says that herbs were given for medicine, (Ezekiel 47:12) He knew there would be need for that. God knew the body would get tired and sick and He made provisions for it. We’re talking about the healing in the body, your Spirit which is the real you can’t get sick. When people are afflicted of demons and evil spirits, they can get sick and such sicknesses can be casted out in the name of Jesus! However, there are sicknesses that aren’t from demons, they are results of earthly imperfections. As long as we are on earth, we can be faced with those things but God has given us a way out if it. Stress can break down the body, poor eating habit can affect the immune system.
:
To stay healthy, cultivate the right mood! Do not let your mood be at the mercies of circumstances and material things! Decide how to feel and gradually get yourself into the right frame of mind. Ensure to practice laughing sessions to yourself! I remember I’d stand in front of the mirror and dance all to myself! Sometimes I would just go to the mirror, look at myself and start telling myself beautiful things! Why? Because I am usually hypersensitive, therefore I like to crawl out of it all the time! Be cheerful, be joyful and never let anything stress you out! Don’t always be found moody, don’t always be the one to cry all night… Be that one person who is known to be happy at all times. Guard your mind and think about those things which are lovely and perfect! Paul said in Philippians 4:9
:
“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”
:
You’ve got to get your mind fixed on things that are admirable. Don’t always think about the bad times, there are good times to think about! Don’t always think about those areas you failed, think about areas you have succeeded! So many people get depressed thinking about the rejections, the less concern they get from friends, the places they’ve failed and so on. You’re different! You have the life of God working in you, you can create joy for yourself! What is more joyous than the knowledge of God’s love! No matter what is happening around you, you’ve got to stay happy. Don’t be with people who always get you sad and make you feel worthless! Be with the people who brings out the best in you, make you feel valued and cheer you up when you’re weak to cheer yourself up. The Bible says in Proverbs 17:22
:
“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength”
:
Can you see that? When you stay cheerful, you’re nourishing your body from the inside out. Haven’t you noticed that a lot of people eat less but still get fat? Look at them, they are people who are always cheerful. Being moody, sad, depressed and angry takes a lot of strength, it has been medically proven to break down the immune systems. I struggled with it a lot, fighting my hypersensitivity, stress and mood swing! It left marks on my immune system and I suffered it for months! Was it the devil? No… It was unhealthy living.
:
Sometimes go for moral social gatherings, go to the movies, go out with friends and never allow your life revolve around just one person because they don’t have to be there all the time!
:
Ultimately, keep speaking the word of God to your life and also keep practicing it. The Bible says in Proverbs 8:21 ”
The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.” So you see, you can bring life or death by what you say with your mouth! Isn’t this why the Bible also said we confess righteousness with our mouth? The more you study the word of God, the more you have good words to speak into your life. The Bible also said the mouth speaks out of the abundance of the heart (Matthew 12:34). The mouth will always say what the heart is full of and you can’t pretend it for long! When your heart is filled with goodness and love, you see yourself acting right and saying the right things to yourself. In James 1:22 we also see that we shouldn’t just hear the word, we should do the word. A practice of the word also puts you in place of healthy living!
:
Since we know we can live healthy lives if our heart and mind are in the right frame, it is obvious that unforgiveness is more dangerous than cancer. It takes storage of bitterness against someone else in the mind to harbor unforgiveness. Unforgiveness is that state of never letting go, of holding on to the memory of the wrongs people did to you! Forgiveness is more beneficial to you than whom you are forgiving. Concerning forgiveness the Bible says in Ephesians 4:31-32
:
“Get rid of all bitterness, passion, and anger. No more shouting or insults, no more hateful feelings of any sort. Instead, be kind and tender-hearted to one another, and forgive one another, as God has forgiven you through Christ.”
:
Practice forgiveness, practice unconditional love and you’ll stay very healthy and live more fulfilled on earth. To kick start it might be difficult, the devil might keep reminding you all the wrong people did to you, you may be reminded of things that really seem unforgivable but believe me, if you can let go of that offense, you’ll feel a burden leave your heart! You’ll feel lighter and you’ll be in a better shape to manifest the glory of God.
:
Stay healthy always!
