CHRISTIAN MATURITY | LET’S GET ON IT!

:
“Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God,” – Hebrews 6:1
:
There is no set time to discover you have grown, there is no such miracle as “Spiritual Growth” & Maturity! There is no growth that comes naturally without some efforts and deliberate application of nutrients designed to aide growth! To be born again needs no effort of yours just to believe and accept what God has done for you by Jesus Christ. However, to grow and mature as a believer, you’ve got serious work to do. You don’t give birth to a Child and not feed the child but you also don’t keep spoon feeding the Child, you teach the child to spoon feed him or herself. A baby needs milk to grow and to some extent soft food, then meat and then bone! This indicates some level of progress in maturity! We can’t say a child who keeps taking milk for years is progressive with growth, something is wrong somewhere! (Read: 1 Peter 2:2, 1 Corinthians 3:1-3)
:
There is no how to be saved except to believe and be saved as the Bible says in John 3:16 but there is how to grow as a believer! There is how to become stronger everyday in our christian walk. The Bible says in John 1:12 that “as many as have received Him, to them He gave power to become sons of God!” You see, God didn’t automatically cause them to manifest as sons because this includes a deliberate effort. He made us His children anyway but gave us power to manifest as sons. What is this power? We know from John 3:16 that we received eternal life which is God’s life the moment we believed! So this means, God has given us His life so we can manifest as Him (Ephesians 5:8). It is in the process of using the life He has given us that we manifest as sons of God because we are born of the Spirit of God.
:
There are so many interesting points we could derive when talking about growing or maturing in our Christian walk but I’d love to categorically list a few points on how we can grow spiritually.
:
1. PRAYERS
:
“Pray without ceasing” – 1 Thessalonians 5:17
:
You’ve got to train yourself to pray and pray even longer. I am not saying that power lies in the length of time you stood praying but if Jesus went up to pray that long, I don’t know who shouldn’t pray. The place of prayer is the place of approaching God, waiting and receiving. Sometimes it would take longer to ultimately switch off from the flesh and truly receive those things that has been transmitted in the Spirit. The Bible says in 1 John 5:14: “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.”
:
The Spirit of God keeps bearing witness to our own Spirit but sometimes we know better the witnesses God’s Spirit bears in our Spirit by subjecting ourselves to prayer. The Bible says we pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17) which means there is no time not to pray. When we pray, we receive and endorse what God’s will for our life is! The moment we became born again, we came into union with God (1 Corinthians 6:17) but one of the ways we take advantage of this union is in the place of prayers because that is where power is made readily available (James 5:16), that is where the active power of God inside of us is unleashed. In the place of prayer, we are asking, we are seeking, we are finding, we are receiving and we are declaring and causing changes therefore taking responsibilities as sons of God. This way we build ourselves as the bible talks about building our most holy faith! (Jude 1:20) You see, there is a place of building and it’s you who do that! By doing so, you’re displaying what God is doing on the inside. One ultimate way to always pray in line with God’s will is to pray in the Spirit, that is how to build up our most Holy faith!
:
The Bible says “In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” – Romans 8:26-27 (for more information on praying in the Spirit, refer to my teachings on that subject on George’s Diary)
:
2. STUDY & MEDITATION OF GOD’S WORD
:
“In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures.” – James 1:18
:
The word of God is a mirror (James 1:23), showing you who you are and what you look like! The word of God is also the mind of God revealed to men. The bible says Jesus is the word of God manifested in the flesh (John 1:14) and we are as He is on this earth (1 John 4:17)! Therefore to know more of the word is to know more of God, more of ourselves and more of our calling! The word of God is light unto our path (Psalm 119:105) which means that God’s word contains direction for us. We can never make mistakes trusting the word of God and walking in it.
:
The word is like the balanced diet to your soul, that is the only means by which your mind is renewed (Romans 12:2) and filled up with the knowledge of who you are. A prince lives like a servant when he is ignorant of who he is. Growth is not possible outside the word of God. Okay, I talked about prayers right? Oh yes! But you can’t even pray right when you aren’t full of the word. Knowledge comes from study and revelation but we enact its power in the place of prayer.
:
3. WALK IN LOVE | WORK OUT
:
“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” – 1 Corinthians 13:13
:
I have already done a teaching on the believers love walk, you may refer to that. You do not walk in love because you feel something or because someone did something for you and you needed to reciprocate. Love is the only way to manifest God (1 John 4:8) and love is the only way to stay afloat as a believer. It is deliberate, you decide to do it against all odds. When you forgive you, you override your flesh’s desire to hate and instate love to rule over the flesh. Love is a habit you must cultivate, something you’ve got to be addicted to even when people see it as weakness.
:
There is no other way to walk in the light of the word if not love (1 John 4:7-8). Spiritual maturity is not in the manifestation of various giftings! Yes, we may speak in other tongues and even prophecy but if we don’t walk in love, we aren’t living the life. Love is the way to build spiritual capacity! The Bible says we ought to work out our salvation with fear and trembling for it is God who works in us both to will and to do (Philippians 2:10) and I know that the only way to work out our salvation is to love and shine like light. To work out our salvation doesn’t mean to do some things in order to be saved but to manifest who we have become. In loving, we love God and we love man unconditionally! We can’t say we love God and not love man. We know a believer’s level of maturity by their level of love. Jesus said in John 13:35 “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
:
4. WALK IN RIGHTEOUSNESS
:
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God–this is your true and proper worship.” – Romans 12:1
:
This is usually the difficult part for a lot of people. We know we have already been made righteous, we know we are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:21) but a lot of us don’t walk in this reality. Spiritual realities aren’t physical realities and therefore the flesh might find it tough to walk in it (Matthew 26:41). But the Bible says we have to mortify the flesh and subject it to the things of the Spirit (Galatians 5:16-18). It becomes easier as we get serious with our love walk.
:
To walk in righteousness we must deal with fear of the unknown. A lot of people commit a lot of crimes just because they still have fears of the unknown. They feel they wouldn’t survive if they don’t take that bribe, they feel they would die of hunger if they don’t engage in that illegal trade! They feel they’d rot in jail if they admit their mistakes and speak the truth! They feel their relationship would experience havoc if they choose to walk in the divine principles of God’s word. To walk in righteousness means to allow God’s word take preeminence over every other thing. Everyone might be doing the wrong thing but you have chosen to do right! Everyone might be living promiscuous life but you have chosen to be different! Even if lots of Church people are becoming immoral and wicked in actions, you have chosen to live the Christ modeled life here on earth. It is not a decision you take based on what you feel but you also don’t need special grace other than the one you have received to take a stand for God!
:
I wouldn’t start listing what and what we do when we walk in righteousness and it is never ever being religious. To walk in righteousness isn’t to dress in certain ways and walk in certain ways… It is not to avoid makeup or even avoid coffee! To walk in righteousness is to walk in genuine love for God and man (Romans 13:8-13) and to truly live as one who is set apart for the one above.
:
There are various teachings available on the Christian maturity but I believe this is one of them and it is a step to the right direction. As you seek to live for God, the Holy Spirit will keep guiding you in amazing ways. Believe me, you can manifest God in that relationship by truly loving your partner and respecting their godly choices. You can manifest God in that business by being sincere and unselfish! You can truly manifest God in that marriage by loving your spouse unconditionally and knowing your family is your primary ministry. You can manifest God by loving your neighbor and seeking their good only. The bible says the only thing we continue to owe one another is love. This is how we know one who is growing; by seeing consistency in their love walk.
:
“For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” – Galatians 5:14

God bless you!
