Wages of Sin vs God’s Gift

wages of sin

The Bible said “the wages of sin is death”. I think that is the only message many people have passed… It is not a complete message! For the bible continued “but the gift of life is eternal life! Through Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23)

You see, God dealt with sin a long time ago… He is no longer dealing with sin because sin has been defeated on the cross! Now, eternal life is God’s free gift, not a gift of doing good! While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us! He died for us not because we are good but because he loves us and wants to give us a way of escape! As it was written in Romans 5:8

“But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”

The conditions of salvation is not as portrayed in the so many messages people preach. Some preachers preach as though one can attain salvation through living moral life. The bible says

“For God so loved the world, that whosoever believe in him will not perish but have eternal life” John 3:16

Remember I quoted a scripture earlier which says death is the wages of sin, but Jesus died in our place instead, so Jesus paid the price by dying in our place.

“and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” (Romans 3:24)

Eternal life is God’s free gift, we cannot earn it by doing good, we cannot earn it by obeying the law! What God expects from us is to “Believe”. It says anyone who believes, anyone here implies anykind of person! It can be a harlot, it can be a thief, it can be a liar and a cheat! The condition is to believe that is was for our sin that Christ died for!

Now, the Bible says “the grace of God has appeared before men teaching us to reject ungodliness”. You see, your duty is to preach God’s grace to people and when they believe, through that same grace, they will learn to say no to ungodliness! It is something God’s grace will teach them and not what you can threaten them to decide! Let’s see how the bible puts it in Titus 2:11-12

“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, 12 instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age,…”

You see, first God’s grace is encountered through His word, the first way to approach sinners is to present to them God’s grace, God’s love is well embedded in the teachings of grace. Secondly it brings salvation, so when a sinner encounters the grace of God, he encounters God’s salvation… Not of works, lest any man can boast (Ephesians 2:8). Now when the salvation is received, the same grace instructs us to live sensibly and godly! So, you don’t present “living godly” to people as a means of salvation!

No one will go to heaven as a result of good works, if that is possible Jesus wouldn’t have come. Our own righteousness makes no sense to God, it is very filthy! Isaiah 64:6 says

“All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.”

God expects us to hold on to Christ’s righteousness! God wants us to believe it for our sins that Christ died and therefore he is no longer counting our sins

“God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:19)

As God’s ambassador, my duty is to make a plea with sinners to be reconciled with God.

Somebody might suggest, “if that is the case, it means everybody is saved”. Well Jesus died for everybody, everybody would have been saved if they believe that Jesus died for them. But, many have not accepted Jesus! You cannot accept until you believe! If I told you I bought you a car and you don’t believe I did, you can’t use that car because you didn’t believe I bought the car. You can only collect the car keys when you believe the car really belongs to you. So it is not God’s duty to force people to believe… A forced belief is not a belief at all! People must willingly believe and that’s why God’s ambassadors all over the world pleads with people to believe and accept this good news that is too good to be true but still true!

How then are we reconciled with God? I noted it earlier but did not elaborate it; we must first of all acknowledge we are sinners! We must agree with God that our actions are no good at all and we must agree that it was for our sins that Christ died for! We must confess with our mouth the Lordship of Jesus over our life and we will believe in our heart that we have been saved through the resurrection of Jesus. I will show you that in the Bible

Romans 10:9
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
